Accessibility statement

Last updated

We want everyone to be able to browse Bright Eyes & Sunflower and shop with ease, including people who use assistive technology. Accessibility is something we keep working on, and this statement is an honest picture of where we are today.

The standard we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, known as WCAG, version 2.2 at level AA. This is the standard most widely used to measure whether a website works well for people with a range of disabilities.

Where we stand

We consider this site partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 AA. That means we meet much of the standard and are actively working on the parts we do not yet meet. We would rather tell you this plainly than claim to be perfect.

What we have done

So far, we have:

  • built the site with clean, structured HTML so screen readers can make sense of it,
  • used real buttons and links with clear labels, and announced changes such as your bag count to screen readers,
  • respected your device's reduce-motion setting, so when it is on, animations and smooth scrolling switch off and content simply appears,
  • kept keyboard focus inside menus and slide-out panels while they are open, and made them closable with the Escape key, returning you to where you were,
  • announced how many products are shown on the shop pages as more load in, and
  • added a skip-to-content link so keyboard users can jump straight past the navigation.

Known limitations

We would rather be honest about what still needs work. We have measured the text on our frosted-glass surfaces, such as the navigation and slide-out panels, against the content that scrolls behind it and tuned it to hold a strong contrast. We re-check this whenever the design changes.

We review the site regularly and keep chipping away at anything that falls short.

Content from others

Some parts of the site come from other companies, such as our embedded Instagram and our checkout, which is run by Stripe. We do not control how those are built, although we choose partners that take accessibility seriously.

Tell us about a problem

If something on the site is not working for you, please tell us. Email us at hello@brighteyesandsunflower.com and describe the problem and the page where it happened. We aim to reply within five business days, and we will do our best to help you get what you need in the meantime.
